Updates to the HCPC standards of proficiency: everything you need to know

Calling all healthcare professionals! Updates have been made to the HCPC standards of proficiency. In this blog, we cover everything you need know.

What are the HCPC standards of proficiency?

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) lays out the skills, knowledge and standards for healthcare positions including occupational therapists, physiotherapists and radiologists.

If your job falls under the HCPC list of regulated titles then you are expected to meet these standards in order to register/remain on the register.

What’s changing?

Following a thorough review of all SoPs, a revised set of standards were established in February.

The HCPC’s updated standards of proficiency for occupational therapists (and the other healthcare professionals) then came into effect on September 1.

Revisions are made annually to ensure standards are up-to-date with current professional practice and “create meaningful impact across the health care professions.”

The HCPC highlighted the following as key areas of focus:

  • Actively implement the standards
  • Promote the public health and prevent ill-health
  • Expand the role of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
  • Further centralise those who need support
  • Look after your own mental health
  • Keep up to date with digital skills and technology
  • Emphasise the importance of leadership at all levels

HCPC recommends healthcare professionals read the SoPs in full for a more in-depth overview of the changes being implemented.
